Does SPC Flooring Need Underlayment?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

If the SPC already has attached backing, an additional soft underlayment may not be necessary or permitted.

SPC With Attached Backing
Many SPC products include attached IXPE or EVA backing.
In this situation, adding another soft underlayment may create more movement or cushioning than the locking system was designed for.
That does not mean every attached-pad product has exactly the same requirements.
Follow the specific flooring system instructions.
SPC Without Attached Backing
If there is no attached backing, a separate underlayment may be required or recommended depending on the product and project.
Possible purposes include:
- Sound reduction
- Minor cushioning
- Separation from the subfloor
- Supporting the flooring system as specified
Underlayment and Moisture Protection Are Different
A soft acoustic underlayment and a vapor or moisture-control layer do not necessarily perform the same function.
For concrete subfloors, the flooring system may still require moisture-related preparation or protection even when the plank already has attached backing.
Requirements vary by product, subfloor and local installation conditions.
Before Adding Underlayment
Check:
- Is backing already attached?
- What does the manufacturer allow?
- Is the subfloor concrete or wood?
- Is moisture control required?
- Is additional acoustic performance needed?
Do not add another layer simply because “more must be better.”
